RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis was defeated by the Utah State University (USU) Aggies, 7-0, Thursday at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Aggies picked up the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. On court one, the UTRGV duo of junior
Rhea Makesar and senior
Barbara Martinez competed hard, going shot-for-shot with the USU team of
Olivia Halverson and
Sabina Pintea.
In that match, the Vaqueros broke while leading 4-3, to set up an opportunity to serve out the match. Halverson and Pintea broke back, to make it 5-4. Martinez and Makesar held a 30-15 advantage in the game before the match was abandoned.
The Vaqueros battled on several courts during the singles session, including winning sets on courts three and four. On court three, Makesar went back-and-forth, trading service games and breaks, with
Natalie Paterova before entering a tiebreaker for the first set. The tiebreak matched the intensity of the entire set, with the pair switching at 3-3 and 6-6 before Makesar won the next two points to take the set. Paterova bounced back to win the second set, 6-2, before escaping with a 10-5 win in the deciding tiebreaker.
On court four, sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs lost the first set 6-2 but bounced back in a big way. Buijtenhuijs trailed
Maria Paula Ramos Garcia 3-2 in the second before knotting the set at 3-3 and breaking serve to take a 4-3 lead. They continued trading games before winning 6-4 in the second. Ramos Garcia took the deciding tiebreaker 10-3.
The Vaqueros had competitive matches on courts two and six as well; however, the Aggies would win in straight sets. On court two, junior
Hitakamya Narwal battled hard, but lost 6-4, 6-4 in a couple of tough sets. On court six, senior
Valentina Urraco dropped her match, 6-3, 6-4.
The Vaqueros will hit the road once again for a doubleheader at Baylor Saturday with the first match scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
