HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Houston Cougars 11-3 on Friday at Schroeder Park.
Junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez belted a 393' 3-run home run over the left center field wall with two outs in the eighth to get the Vaqueros (1-4) on the board, making the score 9-3. Senior
Hank Warren had a pinch-hit single and junior
Rocco Garza Gongora walked ahead of the home run.
Graduate student
Sergio Lopez (0-1) retired the first two Cougars (5-0) he faced before
Xavier Perez doubled and
Antonelli Savattere hit an RBI-single to make the score 1-0.
Lopez retired the first two batters in the second as well before
Riley Jackson homered. Two walks later,
Tre Broussard and Perez hit RBI-singles to put the Cougars up 4-0.
The Cougars put two on with one out in the third, setting up a Jackson two-run single. One out and a walk later, Broussard hit an RBI-single to put the Cougars up 7-0.
That made a winner of
Paul Schmitz (2-0), who struck out seven in 5.0 scoreless innings.
Senior
Caden Wanless pitched well out of the bullpen, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings.
Senior
Nick Nolan added a perfect inning of relief.
In the eighth, though, the Cougars put runners at second and third with one out.
McClane Helton hit a ground ball to second. The throw home got away, allowing both runners to score, putting the Cougars up 11-3.
