LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team was defeated by Texas Tech (TTU) 4-0 Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders picked up the doubles points with quick wins on courts one and three.
In singles, Texas Tech earned the sweep on courts one, four, and five. However, the Vaqueros battled on the other three courts and even led in a couple second sets before the matches were abandoned.
On court two, graduate student and team captain
Sam Whitehead went toe-to-toe with TTU's
Tyler Stewart, dropping the first set 6-4 before bouncing back with an early break in the second set. Whitehead was ahead 4-1 until the match was abandoned.
On court six, sophomore
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan went down early in the first, 4-0, against TTU's
Thomas VanDen Dooren. VanDen Dooren would take the set, 6-3. In the second, Chan broke VanDen Dooren's serve early and built a 4-3 lead before the match ended unfinshed.
On court three, junior
Santiago Serrano dropped the first set 6-3 to the Red Raiders'
Sebastian Abboud, but continued to battle, going back-and-forth with the second set at 4-3, in favor of Abboud, before the match was also abandoned.
The Vaqueros will turn around for a 10 a.m. neutral site match with New Mexico State Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center. Fans can follow along through live stats and can watch a live stream through Texas Tech's
