HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis program fell to the University of Houston (UH), 7-0, Saturday at Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Complex.
The Cougars earned the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
In singles play, the Vaqueros were competitive, battling against the Cougars in a couple of sets on courts one and four.
On court one, senior
Barbara Martinez battled with Houston's
Elizaveta Morozova, going back-and-forth in the first set which ended in a 7-5 win for Morozova. Morozova carried the momentum from that tight first set, earning a 6-3 win in the second.
Meanwhile, on court four, sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs and Houston's
Iva Sepa went the distance. In the first set tiebreak, Buijtenhuijs battled, but ultimately fell, losing the set 7-6 (7:4). Sepa managed to break Bujitenhuijs' serve, taking the second set 6-3 in the process.
Up next, the Vaqueros will travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the first round of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. This first match will be a non-conference matchup with the Vaqueros taking the court after the men's team faces the Islanders.
