THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team completed the three-game sweep of the Nicholls Colonels with a 7-4 victory Sunday at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
Graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas led the Vaqueros (10-10, 5-4 SLC) offensively by going a season-high tying 2-for-4 with a career-high two doubles, an RBI, and a season-high tying two runs scored.
With the game tied at 4 in the eighth, Villescas hit a leadoff double against
Owen Schexnaydre (0-1). With one out, Villescas stole third, from where he scored on a two-out RBI-single by senior
Thomas Williams to put the Vaqueros up 5-4.
In the ninth, the Vaqueros put runners at second and third with one out. The runners took off as graduate student Vela alum
Rudy Gonzalez laid down a bunt to the right side on which no outs were recorded, scoring graduate student
Austin Stracener and putting runners at the corners again. A wild pitch scored junior
Easton Moomau to put the Vaqueros up 7-4.
Senior
Anthony Garcia struck out two in 2.0 scoreless innings for his first save.
The first two Vaqueros walked in the second. One out later, Villescas, senior
Ethan Edinger, and junior
Rocco Garza Gongora hit consecutive doubles to drive-in runs, with Edinger's double driving in two, to put the Vaqueros up 4-0.
The Colonels (11-11, 3-5 SLC) broke through in the fourth when
Greyson Shafer hit a two-run home run to make the score 4-2.
Senior Sharyland alum
Kike Cienfuegos (3-0) entered in the fifth and retired the first four batters he faced before
Carter Jenkins homered to bring the Colonels within 4-3.
The Colonels tied the game in the seventh when, with runners on the corners and two outs,
Matt Melancon hit a dribbler to the third base side of the mound for a game-tying single.
UTRGV visits Rice Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on
