AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team was defeated by the Tarleton (TSU) Texans, 6-1, Sunday at Austin Tennis Academy.
The Texans opened the evening with a sweep of the doubles session to take a 1-0 lead.
UTRGV got on the board with a win by graduate student
Barbara Martinez on court one. Martinez jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. Martinez and her opponent,
Maria Castano, began to trade games with Martinez winning the first 6-3. The beginning of the second set mirrored the end of the first, with the pair trading games until 4-4. Martinez then broke Castano's serve and held on to win 6-4.
The Vaqueros showed tons of fight on the middle courts, forcing ultra-competitive sets. On court three sophomore
Hitakamya Narwal and
Emma Persson were locked into a tight, back-and-forth match with Persson escaping 7-5, 7-6 (7:2).
Meanwhile on court four, junior
Rhea Makesar pushed
Ximena Morales Araneda for a majority of the match, but ultimately fell 6-4, 7-5. On court five, sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs battled with
Marissa Minetti in a grind-it-out straight set match that lasted exactly two hours. Minetti scraped out a 6-4, 7-6 (7:3) victory to close out the match.
The Vaqueros will return host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in round two of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, Saturday at 10 a.m. at Orville Cox Tennis Center. All matches at Orville Cox Tennis Center are free and open to the public.
