Men’s Tennis Defeated at UIW

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team lost 5-2 at the Incarnate Word (UIW) Cardinals Monday at Mabry Tennis Center.

After losing the doubles point, junior Santiago Serrano evened the match with an elite combination of blistering forehands, deep backhands, and crushing flat serves to earn a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win over Marcel Miralles. In the first, Serrano jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Miralles bounced back to make it 3-2 and on-serve. Serrano rallied to win the final three games of the set with a break, hold, and break to take the first set. Tied at 1-1 in the second, Serrano and Miralles traded breaks twice to make it 3-3.

Junior Will Roberts earned his second consecutive win with a huge come from behind victory on court five. At 5-5 in the first set, Ian Uraga broke Roberts serve and proceeded to serve out the set, winning 7-5. In the second set, Roberts and Uraga traded multiple breaks throughout the set, but it was Roberts that pulled through breaking at 5-4 to win the set 6-4. Tied at 2-2, Roberts won four consecutive games to secure the 6-2 win and earn the second point for the Vaqueros.

UIW earned wins on courts one, two, four, and six in singles play to secure the 5-2 win.

On court one, graduate student Sam Whitehead dropped the first set 6-1 before bouncing back to win the second set. That set went the distance, reaching a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreak, Whitehead and his opponent Alejandro Hernandez were knotted at 8-8 before Whitehead followed with a dominant serve and won a clutch return point to secure the set 7-6 (10:8). Hernandez bounced back with a 6-0 win in the third.

On court two, junior Ivo Isqueiro battled with Emilio Vila dropping the first set 6-3, before returning the favor with a 6-3 win. Vila bounced back with a 6-1 win in the third to clinch the match for the Cardinals.

On court six, sophomore Tsz Him Chan dropped the first set 7-5 to Santiago Flyckt before returning the favor in the second. Chan trailed 4-2 before breaking Flyckt's serve twice to take a 5-4 advantage. With an opportunity to serve for the set, Flyckt broke back to make it 5-5. Chan won the next two games of the set to force the deciding 10-point tiebreaker. Chan dropped the final set 1-0 (10:6) in the tiebreaker to finish up the match.

The Vaqueros will return home for another conference swing as they host New Orleans Saturday at 1 p.m. and Nicholls Monday at 3 p.m. at Orville Cox Tennis Center. All matches at Orville Cox Tennis Center are free and open to the public.
