EMMITSBURG, Md. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team opened their three-match road swing this weekend with a dominant 4-0 victory over the Mount St. Mary's University (Mount) Mountaineers Saturday at the Mount St. Mary's Tennis Courts.
The bottom of the lineup shined for the Vaqueros, starting in doubles as the duo of junior
Will Roberts and sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel picked up their first win as a team, defeating the duo of
Luke Papyoanou and
Alexi Roy 6-2 on court two.
Meanwhile, on court three, the duo of junior
Paolo Bonaguro and sophomore
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan picked up a 6-4 win over
Alessio Guarino and
Ryan Wagner to secure the doubles point for the Vaqueros and extend their doubles win streak to four.
The Vaqueros rolled in singles play as they only needed three matches to go final to earn the win.
The scoring started on court six, where Bonaguro dominated, not dropping a single game to
Andrew Allen, winning 6-0, 6-0. Shortly after, Chan wrapped up his match on court five, a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing against
Joshua Johnson.
The clincher was Roberts, who concluded his match two minutes after Chan, in another dominating performance, defeating Papyoanou
6-1, 6-0 to lift the Vaqueros to victory.
Due to a limited number of courts, the matches on courts one, two, and three did not begin competition.
The Vaqueros will continue their road trip through the Washington metropolitan area, as they will visit George Mason on Monday at 9 a.m. before playing a second match that afternoon at Morgan State, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
