NACOGDOCHES – After a rain delay of 1:37 prior to first pitch, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 7-2 on Friday at Pilgrim's Park.
In the second, the Vaqueros (14-19, 9-10 SLC) put runners at first and second with one out against
Cody Templeton (4-0), setting up an RBI-double by graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas and an RBI-groundout by senior
Hank Warren to make the score 2-0.
The Lumberjacks (19-16, 10-6 SLC) loaded the bases on walks in the bottom of the inning. With two outs,
Cermodrick Bland was plunked to force-in a run.
Jhett Creel followed with a walk to bring home another run and tie the game at 2.
In the fifth, the 'Jacks put a runner at second with one out.
Ethan Pena hit a fly ball to deep left that sophomore Sharyland Pioneer
Andy Chapa caught by leaping at the left field wall to rob a home run.
Juan Cantua, however, followed with an RBI-single to put the 'Jacks up 3-2.
That was the only run against graduate student
Colton Vercoe (1-4), who struck out a career-high seven in a career-high tying 3.1 innings while allowing three hits and two walks.
Coby DeJesus led off the sixth with a double. One out later he scored on a Bland single. After a Creel single and a wild pitch put runners at second and third,
Julian Swift hit an RBI-single. The throw to the infield got away, allowing an additional run to score, putting the 'Jacks up 6-2.
Cantua drew a one-out walk in the seventh and scored on a
Josh Ibe RBI-double to extend the 'Jacks lead to 7-2.
UTRGV and SFA play the middle game of the series Saturday at 6 p.m. on
ESPN+.
