Buijtenhuijs Shines in the Top Spot as Women’s Tennis Falls at Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis fell at Southeastern (SLU), 6-1, in a Southland Conference (SLC) match Saturday at Southeastern Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Luna Buijtenhuijs shined, earning her first-ever win on court one, taking down Panatchakorn Suanarsa 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10:2). In the second set, Buijtenhuijs jumped out to a big 3-0 lead before Suanarsa closed the gap, knotting the set at 3-3. The pair traded games until 5-5, where Buijtenhuijs broke Suanarsa for fifth time in the second set and served out the set in the final game. In the tiebreak, Buijtenhuijs exploded to a 6-0 lead before Suanarsa got on the board. Buijtenhuijs cruised from there, winning 10-2 to win the match.

Southeastern swept the doubles point but entered a tough battle on court two where junior Hitakamya Narwal and sophomore Mariia Bakhtina fell in a close match with Taisia Bolsova and Aitana Darder taking the win, 7-6 (7:4).

In singles play, Southeastern clinched the match with wins on courts four, five, and six, but had to fight on courts two and three.

On court three, Bakhtina dropped the first set 6-3 to Darder before bouncing back with a 6-3 win of her own in the second. In that set, the first four games featured service breaks until Bakhtina held at 2-2 to take a 3-2 lead. Bakhtina then broke again to push the lead to 4-2. She fended off Darder, winning the set 6-3. Bakhtina fought hard in the deciding tiebreaker, but ultimately fell, 1-0 (10:5)

Junior Rhea Makesar fought hard in the first set against Bente Bierma ultimately losing 7-6 (9:7). In that set, Bierma jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Makesar rattled off three straight to knot the set at 4-4. Bierma was able to fend off Makesar in a tight tiebreaker to earn the win on court two.
