RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Southeastern Lions 11-6 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Junior
Armani Raygoza led the Vaqueros (17-21, 11-12 SLC) offensively by going 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Rocco Garza Gongora went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Junior
Easton Moomau finished 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
The Vaqueros trailed 7-0 after two innings but broke through against
Nik Toups (2-1) in the third, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Garza Gongora hit into a double play to score senior
Hank Warren. Senior
Thomas Williams followed with a nine-pitch walk, setting up a Raygoza two-run home run to make the score 7-3. Raygoza's home run, his 13
th of the season, traveled 356'.
Then, down 8-3 with one out in the seventh, Garza Gongora singled, stole second, and moved to third on an error. Williams drove-in Garza Gongora with a single. Raygoza followed with a single. Junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez hit a fly ball to deep center to score Williams and allow Raygoza to move to second. That allowed Raygoza to score on a Moomau bloop single to bring the Vaqueros within 8-6.
The Lions (24-16, 13-7 SLC), however, loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth.
Brooks Wright hit a bloop RBI-single and then
Dane Watts hit a two-run single down the right field line to make the score 11-6.
Levi Shaffer pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for his second save.
The Lions put their first two men aboard against junior
JC Gutierrez (0-1) via a hit batsman and a bunt single.
Brody Capps hit an RBI-single, and then after Gutierrez struck out the next two,
Connor Cuff hit a two-run double to put the Lions up 3-0.
The Lions batted around to score four more runs (two earned) in the second, as with the bases loaded and one out, Capps and
Justin Williams hit RBI-singles. A passed ball scored another run and then an error brought him the final run of the inning, putting the Lions up 7-0.
Graduate student
Robert Bonilla kept the Lions off the board until the seventh, when the Lions loaded the bases with two outs.
Ben Robichaux walked to force-in a run, putting the Lions up 8-3.
Bonilla pitched a season-high 4.1 innings, striking out four while allowing one run on four hits and two walks.
Game two of the doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m.
