LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Little Rock Trojans 15-10 on Wednesday at Gary Hogan Field.
Senior
Thomas Williams led the Vaqueros (18-23) by going a season-high tying 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk, a season-high tying three RBI, and a run scored. Graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. Junior
Rocco Garza Gongora finished 2-for-5 with a career-high tying two doubles, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Senior
Hank Warren went 2-for-5 with a double.
The Vaqueros got off to a fast start as Garza Gongora doubled and Williams hit an RBI-triple to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.
The Trojans (25-17) responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, as
Jerdy Lopez singled and
Kade Smith hit an RBI-double. Two outs later, a passed ball scored Smith, putting the Trojans up 2-1.
The Vaqueros plated six runs in the second. Villescas led off the inning with a triple. Senior
Rene Galván followed with a grounder to first that got through the first baseman as Villescas scored. Later in the inning, with runners on the corners and two outs, Williams hit a two-run single. After a single by junior

Julius Ramirez hit an RBI-single. Junior
Easton Moomau walked to loaded the bases, setting up a Villescas two-run double to cap the inning with the Vaqueros up 7-2.
In the bottom of the frame,
Ty Rhoades led off with a double against graduate student
Robert Bonilla (0-1), moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI-single by
Trey Hill to bring the Trojans with 7-3.
With two outs in the third, the Trojans drew back-to-back walks, setting up RBI-singles by
Nolan Freund and Rhoades and an RBI-double by
Ryan Geck. After a hit batsman,
Cooper Chaplain walked to force-in a run and Lopez hit a two-run single to put the Trojans up 9-7.
That made a winner of
Luke Schimmels (3-0), who struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
The Trojans loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth. Smith hit a sacrifice fly,
Angel Cano grounded out to bring home a run, and a balk scored Lopez to put the Trojans up 12-7.
The Vaqueros got two back in the sixth, as Williams and graduate student
Austin Stracener singled and Moomau hit a two-out, two-run single to bring the Vaqueros within 12-9.
Garza Gongora hit an RBI-double in the seventh to cut the deficit to 12-10.
Michael O'Brien and Freund responded with RBI-singles in the bottom of the inning, though, to extend the Trojans' lead to 14-10.
Lopez added an RBI-single in the eighth to push the Trojans' lead to 15-10.
UTRGV opens a three-game conference series at McNeese Friday at 6 p.m. on
ESPN+.
