LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the McNeese Cowboys 5-3 on Saturday at Joe Miller Ballpark.
Junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez led the Vaqueros (19-24, 13-13 SLC) offensively by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior
Rocco Garza Gongora went a season-high tying 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Junior
Easton Moomau finished 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Cowboys (23-20, 11-12 SLC) opened the third inning with a pair of infield singles against sophomore
Harrison Thayer (6-3). After a ground ball put runners on the corners,
Danny Barbero grounded out to bring home a run, and
Hayden Stringfellow hit an RBI-single to put the Cowboys up 2-0.
In the fourth, the Vaqueros put two on with one out, setting up an RBI-single by graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas to make the score 2-1.
In the fifth, Garza Gongora led off with a double and stood at third with two outs when junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez singled off
Connor Achee (2-4) down the left field line to tie the game at 2.
The Cowboys put a runner on first with one out in the sixth.
DJ Pinkerton hit an RBI-double off the right-center field wall.
Marcus Heusohn followed with an RBI-double to left center to put the Cowboys up 4-2.
Junior
Armani Raygoza hit his 14
th home run of the season to bring the Vaqueros within 4-3 in the seventh.
Matt Stancliff answered with a home run of his own in the bottom of the inning to put the Cowboys up 5-3.
Jaden Bahl pitched 2.0 scoreless innings for his first save.
UTRGV and McNeese complete the series Sunday at 1 p.m. on
ESPN+.
