CORVALLIS, Ore. – Graduate student
Robert Bonilla struck out a career-high seven in a career-high 5.2 innings, but The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the No. 6 Oregon State Beavers 4-2 on Tuesday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Bonilla (0-2) kept the game scoreless until the sixth, when with runners at second and third and two outs, a passed ball scored
Bryson Glassco. After a walk, Bonilla exited and
Adam Haight hit a two-run single to cap the inning with the Beavers (34-9) up 3-0.
Bonilla threw 60 of his career-high 102 pitches for strikes while scattering four hits and three walks.
The Vaqueros (20-25) scored their first run in the eighth when junior
Easton Moomau hit a 337' home run into the right field bleachers. Graduate student
Diego Villescas and senior
Hank Warren followed with singles, forcing the Beavers to turn to
Albert Roblez, who escaped the eighth.
The Beavers extended their lead to 4-1 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when Glassco doubled and
Ethan Porter hit an RBI-single.
With one out in the ninth, though, junior
Armani Raygoza launched a 408' home run to right-center, marking the first extra-base hit allowed by Roblez this season. Junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez followed with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Roblez bounced back to get the final two outs for his 13
th save.
Raygoza finished 2-for-4.
This was just the third time a team has forced the Beavers to turn to Roblez for 2+ innings and the first time since March 21 at UC Irvine. The other time was Feb. 16 against Michigan.
The Vaqueros mustered three hits against
Trey Morris (3-0) – all of which were leadoff singles, including Ramirez in the second, Warren in the third, and senior
Thomas Williams in the fourth. Morris struck out six without walking anyone in 6.0 innings.
Warren finished 2-for-3.
