RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that redshirt junior
Andrew Taylor of the baseball team, is the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Taylor broke out this weekend, recording his first multi-hit and multi-homer game on Tuesday. He continued his tear on Saturday reaching base in all three of his plate appearances against Tarleton State.
The blistering week started at Abilene Christian (ACU) on Tuesday when Taylor, making his first start as a designated hitter, hit a two-run home run in the first inning to complete at 2-out rally started by a walk from redshirt junior
Armani Raygoza.
Taylor remained hot, adding a solo shot in the sixth inning before hitting an RBI single in the eighth inning. Taylor finished with a career-high three hits, two home runs, and four RBIs to lift UTRGV to a 13-7 win over ACU in the midweek matchup.
On Saturday, Taylor started at left field, picking up two hits in two plate appearances which included a double and two RBI. In his only other at-bat of the game, Taylor drew a walk.
Taylor finished the week with a .625 batting average, .700 on-base percentage, and three extra base hits.
The Vaqueros will head to Beaumont for the Southland Conference Tournament. UTRGV clinched the third seed in the tournament and will face No. 6 Northwestern State at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
