RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Junior
Armani Raygoza became The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team's all-time leader in RBI as UTRGV completed the sweep of the UIW Cardinals with a 5-0 win Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,047.
Raygoza went 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI, the 137
th of his career, breaking a tie with
Vinnie Mejia (2010-12) for the top spot.
UTRGV has now welcomed 74,465 fans through 20 home dates, the second-highest total in program history and a program record average of 3,723 fans per date.
The Vaqueros (24-25, 17-13 SLC) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when, with one out, graduate student PSJA alum
Diego Villescas walked and seniors
Hank Warren and
Damien Whitfield singled to bring home a run. After sophomore
Evan Janner walked to load the bases, junior
Chayton Fischer hit a two-run double to knock out Cardinals (18-27, 8-19 SLC) starter
Fawster Voytko (2-5). Another walk loaded the bases. Senior
Thomas Williams hit a sacrifice fly and Raygoza capped the inning with an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 5-0.
That made a winner of junior La Joya alum
JC Gutierrez (1-1), who struck out a career-high tying four in a career-high 5.1 hitless innings of relief.
Sophomore
Mason Engel started and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out two while scattering three singles.
UTRGV visits Abilene Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
