RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that redshirt junior
JC Gutierrez of the baseball team, is the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
The La Joya High alum starred in his two appearances on the mound this week, both out of the bullpen. His first came in UTRGV's win over No. 6 Oregon State.
In that outing, Gutierrez pitched 2.1 inning and allowed only one earned run. UTRGV went on to defeat the Beavers, 9-7. The win was UTRGV's highest ranked win since 1983, when the Vaqueros took three of four from No. 1 Wichita State.
Guiterrez shined on Sunday as well, pitching a career-high 5.1 hitless and scoreless innings against UIW. His efforts earned him his first-career win while he struck out a career-high tying four strikeouts. Gutierrez only allowed one walk in the appearance.
UTRGV defeated UIW 5-0 to secure the series sweep and ride a four-game win streak into their midweek matchup against Abilene Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m.
