RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sold 162 basketball season tickets through the Helmets to Hoops promotion, setting a department record for new season ticket sales in a season. 
 
The first part of the promotion ran from Aug. 10-21, giving fans the opportunity to purchase season tickets to guarantee seats for 29 home men's and women's basketball games and gain access to a presale window for single-game football tickets. Fans were able to purchase single-game tickets for all five home football games equal to the number of basketball season tickets purchased, resulting in a total of 631 single-game football tickets being sold through the Aug. 23 presale. 
 
UTRGV Athletics will keep the promotion rolling with special pricing for basketball season and single-game tickets only during the first two home football game days, Aug. 29 and Sept. 19, until 11:59 p.m.
 
The men's and women's basketball teams, including men's head coach Brandon Chambers and women's head coach Lane Lord, will have their own tailgate in the corporate tailgate zone on Saturday ahead of the season-opening football game against UT Permian Basin at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium. The Vaqueros will be at the tailgate from 4-6 p.m. There will be free food while supplies last. Fans can stop by to engage with the Vaqueros and purchase basketball season tickets at discounted prices:

Fans will also get exclusive early access to single-game tickets for the women's season opener against Arlington Baptist at 5 p.m. and the men's season opener against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7:30 p.m., both at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Nov. 2:

The 2026-27 basketball season will bring exciting contests to the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Three postseason teams will visit the Valley during UTRGV's non-conference contests, including Prairie View A&M's men's team which won a First Four game in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, and North Dakota State and Abilene Christian – a pair of women's teams ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25 throughout the 2025-26 season. The Vaqueros are set for several competitive Southland Conference battles. There will be six Saturdays that bring women's and men's doubleheader action to the UTRGV Fieldhouse. 
 
UTRGV's basketball teams had the best combined seasons in school history in 2025-26. The women's basketball team is coming off the winningest season in program history which saw the Vaqueros earn the first postseason road victory in program history as they reached the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament. The men's team won a program-record 14 conference games and recorded back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1988-90.
