RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team defeated the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (TAMIU) Sunday, 1-0, at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
In the 41
st minute, sophomore
Amy Romero scored her first goal as a Vaquero, a header that hit the right side of the net. Sophomore
Sienna Church launched a beautiful cross off a free kick from the right wing to earn her first career assist.
Romero, the St. Thomas transfer, came to UTRGV with head coach
Nataki Stewart who is in his first year with the program after leading St. Thomas for the last three seasons.
UTRGV (3-2) extended its win streak to three, the longest since 2024, and has earned a shutout in the last three matches. For the first time in the
Nataki Stewart era, the Vaqueros own a winning record.
The UTRGV defense held the line as they did not allow a shot on goal on five shots. The Vaqueros used both goalkeepers sophomore
Mariana Amezcua to start the match and junior
Veronica Pacione, who subbed in to play the 2
nd half.
UTRGV remained physical throughout the match trying to jostle for position. The Vaqueros tallied a yellow card in the 51
st minute by sophomore
Natalie Singleton, and in the 69
th minute the Dustdevils
Fredes Manrique was credited a yellow card as well.
UTRGV outshot TAMIU (0-1) 11-5 with a 2-0 shot on goal advantage. The Dustdevils also had three corners to the Vaqueros one.
The Vaqueros hit the road to Pritchett Field for a Thursday match against the Sam Houston Bearkats, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
