RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) swimming and diving team will compete in front of the public for the first time this season when it hosts the Orange & Gray Intrasquad Meet and Pentathlon this weekend at the City of Pharr-PSJA Natatorium.
The meet begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. and resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Vaqueros will get the weekend started Thursday with a modified six-dive competition during practice. Divers will compete on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, completing three dives on each board. The scores will be added to the team results.
The UTRGV diving team is going to utilize Pharr Aquatic Center diving well for the first time in an organized meet.
PENTATHLON SET FOR FRIDAY
Friday's competition will feature the swimming pentathlon, giving each swimmer the opportunity to compete in five 100-meter events: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley.
Head coach
Betsy Graham enters the season excited about the depth and talent across both sides of the program.
"I'm looking forward to this year," Graham said. "The freshman class is strong on both the swim and dive sides.
Annaleagh Stahl and
Manou Meulebeek are still our leaders in the pool and on the boards, and I expect some outstanding things from them this year."
TRADITIONAL MEET FORMAT SATURDAY
Saturday will provide the Vaqueros with a more traditional meet-day environment, as the swimmers compete across 10 events covering all four strokes and relay competition.
The meet will give UTRGV an early opportunity to experience a competitive environment while continuing to build toward the regular-season schedule.
FRIDAY SCHEDULE (first event begins at 5:30 p.m.):
- 100 freestyle
- 100 backstroke
- 100 breaststroke
- 100 butterfly
- 100 individual medley
SATURDAY SCHEDULE (first event begins at 10 a.m.):
- 200 medley relay
- 100 freestyle
- 50 freestyle
- 200 individual medley
- 100 butterfly
- 100 freestyle
- 100 backstroke
- 500 freestyle
- 100 breaststroke
- 400 freestyle relay
