RIO GRANDE VALLEY — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team fell to Houston Christian University (HCU) 4-1 at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex Sunday.
The Vaqueros (4-6-1, 0-2-1 SLC) cut into the deficit in the 31
st minute when freshman
Anuhea Aalona scored her second career goal on a chip in shot, finding the bottom-right corner of the net to make it 2-1.
The Huskies (5-3-3, 1-0-1 SLC) opened the scoring in the ninth minute when
Paisley Barela found the bottom-left corner of the net off an assist from
Isabella Dillow to give HCU a 1-0 lead.
Barela struck again in the 16
th minute, scoring her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from
Olivia Rossman to extend the HCU lead to 2-0.
UTRGV goalkeeper sophomore
Mariana Amézcua kept the Vaqueros within striking distance throughout the opening half, making seven saves, including stops on shots from Dillow, Barela and Rossman.
HCU earned a penalty minutes later, but Huskies'
Zylee Dominguez was unable to convert as Amézcua made a diving save, going full extension to the left side of the net.
The Huskies regained their two-goal advantage in the 37
th minute when Madison Stormberg scored from the right side off an assist from
Ella Remy, making it 3-1.
HCU tacked on with a penalty kick that connected on the left corner of the net by Remy in the 88
th minute.
Amezcua tied her career-high in saves with eight, the second time since her eight save performance at Tarleton State earlier this season.
The Huskies outshot the Vaqueros 21-5 with a 14-1 advantage on goal. HCU also tallied 10 corners versus two by UTRGV.
The Vaqueros return to action Oct. 8, to face McNeese at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 11 a.m., on Thursday.
All matches held at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex will be free and open to the public. Gates open at 10 a.m.
