Emergency Personnel
A certified athletic trainer (ATC) will be present during all practices and games. When an athletic training student certified in basic life support is available, they will assist the ATC as needed. Game days will have the addition of one of our team physicians and a sports medicine fellow.
Emergency Communication:
- ATC and athletic training students will carry a personal cellular device at all practices and games.
- Activate EMS through Campus Shield or Call Campus Police (956) 882-4911 or 9-1-1.
Emergency Equipment
Practice
Splint Kit- located in Fieldhouse athletic training room, in left lower cabinet in northeast corner of the room next to the printer
AED – located in athletic training room and under practice hydration cart
Game:
Splint Kit- is located on the home bench
AED – located in athletic training room and under home bench hydration cart
Roles of First Responders
Practice:
- Immediate care of the injured student-athlete or faculty/staff member
- Activate emergency medical system (EMS) through Campus Shield, calling 9-1-1 or campus police at (956) 882-4911 from personal device.
- Provide:
- Name, location, telephone number of caller
- Nature of emergency
- Number of patients involved
- Condition of patient(s)
- First aid treatment initiated by first responder
- Specific directions as needed to locate the emergency scene
- Gather information as requested by dispatcher do not hang up until told by the dispatcher
- Emergency equipment retrieval- from fieldhouse athletic training room
- Direction of EMS to scene
- Designate individual(s) to wait at the front of entrance to “flag down” EMS and direct them to the injured student-athlete or faculty/staff member
- Scene control: limit scene to first aid providers and move bystanders away from area
Game:
- Immediate care of the injured student-athlete, faculty/staff member, fan
- Activate emergency medical system (EMS) through Campus Police that is standing at west entry way of the court
- Emergency equipment retrieval
Venue Directions:
Fieldhouse is located at the Northeast corner of campus at the intersection of 5
th Street and Van Week Street. When heading east on University Dr. turn left onto Miguel A. Nevarez Dr./ 5
th Street to head north, turn left into parking lot E16 using further two entries closer to Van Week St., ramp access is accessible through the far left double door entry of the Fieldhouse.
