After pitching for UTRGV in 2023, Jon Barrera joined the coaching staff in 2024 as a student assistant before becoming a volunteer video analyst for the 2025 season.
A left-hander, Barrera's time on the mound was limited at UTRGV as he battled injury for two seasons (2022-23). His last full season was 2021 at Cisco College, when he went 7-1 in 14 games (11 starts), striking out 63 in 55.0 innings. Barrera started his collegiate career at Texas Tech in 2020, helping the Red Raiders to go 16-3 and ran No. 1 in the polls for the first time since 1997. In his final outing, Barrera pitched a scoreless inning against Rice.
Originally from Corpus Christi, Barrera was a TBCA 5A All-State Third Team, TSWA 5A All-State Honorable Mention and District 30-5A MVP as a senior at Richard King High School. A TSWA 5A All-State Honorable Mention as a junior and a four-time All-District Team honoree, Barrera finished senior year with a 1.23 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 71.0 innings. He recorded a 0.79 ERA as a junior with 120 strikeouts in 69.0 while going with a 10-1 in 12 games. Barrera also hit .273 with three home runs and 30 RBI as a senior.
