Ekaterina Vorobeva joined The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams on Aug. 15, 2022.
Vorobeva comes to UTRGV from Northwood University, where she was the women’s tennis team captain and served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She attended and played tennis for Savannah State University for two years before transferring to Northwood, where she earned a Bachelor and Master of Business Administration.
During the 2021-22 season, Vorobeva went 19-3 in singles and 14-7 in doubles, winning 10 of her final 11 singles matches (one unfinished). With that streak, she became the first player in Northwood women’s tennis history to win 20 consecutive sets in singles action. Vorobeva and her doubles partner, Iryna Trystan, finished the season ranked No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NCAA Division II Midwest Region doubles rankings.
Vorobeva helped the ITA Midwest No. 8 Timberwolves go 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to claim the 2022 regular season conference co-championship. In 2020-21, she earned All-GLIAC Honorable Mention honors and was an All-Academic Excellence recipient in 2020-21.
At Northwood, the Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia native was the International Student Organization Vice President and on the Strosacker Library Advisory Committee, where she worked as a library assistant.
Prior to her collegiate career, Vorobeva was ranked No. 1 in her Republic and was a top-100 player in Russia from 2012-14.
