Rusty Laverentz, the former Director of Operations for the University of Houston women’s basketball program who has an additional 18 years of coaching experience, joined UTRGV women's basketball as the coordinator for women’s basketball operations in July 2017.
In his new role, Laverentz will be coordinating all of the women’s basketball program’s travel arrangements, keeping track of the budget, overseeing academic progress, and assisting with scouting and game preparation.
Laverentz worked at Houston from 2010-13, handling team travel, scheduling, video, equipment management, community outreach, the budget, recruiting visits, and camps.
He has an additional four seasons of full-time Division I experience as an assistant coach with Houston Baptist from 2007-10 and Central Arkansas in 2013-14.
Laverentz’s most recent coaching post was as the head coach at Connors State College in 2014-15. He was also the head coach at New Mexico Junior College from 2005-07 following five seasons as an assistant coach. Over the last year and a half, Laverentz has worked for the college scouting organization National Scouting Report.
Laverentz began his coaching career as a student assistant with the women’s basketball team at Missouri Western State while playing baseball from 1993-96. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Laverentz became a graduate assistant at Arkansas State. He earned his Master of Science in Physical Education in 1998 and then stayed on one more season as a volunteer assistant coach.
Laverentz has extensive experience working with camps, as he has been an instructor for camps at Texas A&M, TCU, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State and Missouri Western State in addition to the 2001 Adidas All-American Camp.
