Antwon Hicks, the husband of head coach Shareese Hicks, joined the team as a volunteer assistant in the fall of 2021.

2025 Outdoor
Nayla Harris completed the SLC sprint double by adding the 100-meter title to her indoor 60 gold. Her 11.22 was the fastest women’s 100 in SLC history, a school record and an NCAA West qualifying mark, and she was named UTRGV Female Breakout Athlete of the Year. Corin Burns set program records in the 100 (10.17), 200 (20.79) and 4x100 relay (39.93), took conference silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200 and 4x100, and advanced to the second round of the 200 at NCAA West for the first time. Freshman Jizzale Davis was the SLC runner-up in the 200 with a personal best of 23.53 (No. 2 in program history), placed fourth in the 100 and with the 4x100, and qualified for the USATF U-20 Championships, the third straight year UTRGV had a qualifier. Alejandro Arellano dropped his 400 best from 48.71 to 46.99 (ninth in program history) and ran on the bronze-medal 4x400 that posted the program’s second-best time ever, 3:08.47.

2025 Indoor
Harris opened the season by breaking the women’s 60 program record at the LSU Purple Tiger, then won the Stan Scott Invite at Texas Tech over athletes from Ohio State, UCF and Texas Tech, lowering her own record and earning the program’s first SLC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award. Ranked No. 1 in the SLC in the 60 all season, she won the conference title, the first SLC championship in program history. Jamari Harts became the SLC 400 champion with a program record and added fourth-place finishes in the 60 and 200. Jizzale Davis took bronze in the 200, moved to No. 2 in program history and was eighth in the 60. She also helped the women’s 4x400 (with Aliyah Castillo, Trinity Kirk and Zoe Adams) to bronze, and Richard Young, Alejandro Arellano, Cerrone Thompson and Derrius Henry won bronze in the men’s 4x400. The men’s 400 group rose as high as 40th nationally, and the 60 and 200 groups peaked at 21st and 41st. Corin Burns headlined the short sprints until an injury.

2024 Outdoor

Symoria Adkins was the story of the WAC Outdoor Championships, winning the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay (and the 100 hurdles) without losing a race from prelims to finals. She was named the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer and UTRGV Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Her 2024 program records included 11.47 in the 100, 23.49 in the 200 and 44.42 in the 4x100 with Nayla Harris, Zoë Adams and Yaria Akers, and she qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary. Freshman Gael Romo qualified for the USATF U20 Championships, and Harris, Jamari Harts and Jermarrion Stewart were among the season’s other standouts.

2024 Indoor

Symoria Adkins set program records in the 60 (7.44) and 200 (24.01) and took silver in the 200. Jamari Harts ran the No. 1 60 time in program history (6.74) in his first indoor season and finished with a 200 personal best, and Gael Romo took bronze in the 60 while tying that 6.74 mark. Sam Johnson II ran indoor bests in the 200 (21.39) and 400 (48.05) at the WAC meet, setting program records in the 200 and 4x400. Jermarrion Stewart set two program records at conference, running 47.21 for sixth in the 400 and contributing to the 4x400’s fourth-place finish. Aisha Gay took silver in the 400 and set a program record with the women’s 4x400, and Zoë Adams made two finals, won bronze in the 400 and helped that relay. Nationally, the men’s 400 group finished 48th, the 200 group 66th and the 60 group 72nd, while the women’s 200, 60 and 400 groups ranked 74th, 76th and 91st.

2023 Outdoor

Aisha Gay set program records in the 400 (53.30, bronze at WAC) and, with Jada Hoffman, Yaria Akers and Symoria Adkins, in the 4x100 (45.40, fourth), and advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary. Freshman Adkins won silver in the 200 with a program-record 23.59 and made eight individual and two relay entries into the record book. Sam Johnson II took bronze in the 400 with a program-record 46.25 and anchored the silver-medal 4x400 that set a program record of 3:08.36 with Jaqualand Fields, Jamari Harts and Jermarrion Stewart; he also qualified for NCAA West. Harts and Stewart joined Johnson in the 400 final, all four men set personal bests, and the group rose to 30th nationally as an event squad. Derrius Henry, Fields, Stewart and Johnson won the 4x400 at the Cactus Cup with a meet record, and Adkins and Harts competed at the USATF U20 Championships.

2023 Indoor

Jada Hoffman was fourth in the 60 in her debut and broke the program record at the WAC meet with a 7.51 prelim, reaching the final. Aisha Gay ran 55.90 in the 400 at the Jarvis Scott Open, No. 3 in program and WAC performance lists, then set a program record of 24.29 in the 200 prelim at conference, where she took bronze in the 400 and finished sixth in the 200. Symoria Adkins and Nayla Harris both made the record book, Adkins in the 200 and Harris in the 60, and Yashawn Hamilton stood out in the men’s 60. At the WAC meet, all four women’s 60 runners and all six women’s 200 runners ran personal bests.

2022 Outdoor

Jermarrion Stewart made two entries into the program’s all-time 100-meter list, and Yashawn Hamilton added another. The women’s 4x100 team of Mikayla Roell, Elizabeth Ortiz, Daniella Muniz and Devon Goodwin took eighth at the WAC meet.

2022 Indoor

Jermarrion Stewart set the program record in the men’s 60 at the WAC Indoor Championships with a time of 6.83.

Antwon Hicks previously serves as a volunteer assistant at Memphis, where Shareese Hicks was an assistant coach from 2019-21.
 
Antwon Hicks had a storied track & field career, becoming the first American to win the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles in the 2002 World Junior Championships. A 15-time state high school champion and the 1999 American Junior Champion in the high jump, Hicks went on to compete at Ole Miss from 2002-04, winning two NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles. During outdoor competition, Hicks ranked fifth in the NCAA in the 110-meter hurdles as a freshman.
 
Hicks went on to become a semifinalist in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2004 US Olympic Trials before placing sixth at the 2005 USA Outdoor Championships.
 
Hicks won the 2009 Golden League Championship in the 110-meter hurdles and then won the Nigerian National Championship in the same event in 2016.
 
Hicks and his wife, Shareese, have one daughter, Semira.
