Alfred Castillo, a 1995 graduate of legacy institution The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) and former student trainer, became the Head Athletic Trainer at UTRGV on Dec. 4, 2017.
Castillo comes to UTRGV from Brownsville ISD, where he was serving as the District Athletic Trainer after 19 years working in NCAA Division I Athletics.
Most recently, Castillo was the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine/Director of Sports Performance at Bowling Green from 2014-17, during which time he provided coverage for 18 varsity sport programs comprised of approximately 450 student-athletes while managing 10 certified athletic trainers. He worked directly with the Bowling Green football program and has experience working with Vivature, a new piece of software that is being implemented to manage student-athlete healthcare.
Castillo started his athletic training career with PSJA North High School as the Head Athletic Trainer from 1996-99. He then returned to the collegiate level as an assistant athletic trainer at Texas A&M, working with the football and men’s and women’s track & field and cross country programs from 1999-2001.
Castillo spent the next five years as the Associate Head Football Athletic Trainer/Assistant Athletic Trainer at Missouri, where he worked with football, and men’s and women’s track & field, cross country, and swimming and diving.
Castillo then moved to Southeast Missouri State, where he served as the Head Athletic Trainer/Director for Sports Performance from 2006-14. In that role, Castillo provided coverage for 15 sport programs made up of approximately 350 student-athletes while overseeing four full time staff members, six graduate assistants and 25-30 student trainers. Castillo worked directly with the football program.
Castillo’s additional experience includes working as a rehab coordinator at Quality Therapy Services from 1995-96, as an assistant athletic trainer for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in 1994, and as an Emergency Care Attendant with Donna Volunteer Emergency Medical Services from 1991-94.
Castillo earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from UTPA in 1995 and a master’s degree in sports physiology from Texas A&M in 2001.
