EDINBURG - "We're going to find out what we're made of," says Coach Eloy Moran before his Pan American University soccer team's two-game road trip next weekend.
The Broncs travel to Huntsville Friday for a match with powerful Sam Houston State University. Saturday they have a date with Houston Baptist, a team which was ranked in the Midwest region last year.
"They were the only team that beat us last year," Moran said of Sam Houston State. The Broncs suffered a 3-1 defeat on their way to a 13-1-1 record in 1986.
Last week the Bronc juggernaut erupted for an 8-0 whitewash of Texas Lutheran College.
Salvador Garcia of Brownsville, Sammy Zavala of Harlingen and
Efren Lopez of McAllen contributed two goals apiece.
Jose Salinas and
Hugo Lopez, both of McAllen, each punched in one goal.
The Broncs scored four times in a 10-minute span in the first half, including one by an opportunistic Zavala, a freshman forward. "I intercepted a pass and moved up and saw the goalie come up and I tipped it over (for a goal)," he explained.
Goalie Fredy Sanguinetti played well to secure the Broncs' eighth shutout in their last nine outings dating back to last season.
A modest freshman, Sanguinetti credited his defensive helpers. "The defense played its role so I didn't have to do much," he said.
