Soccer Prepares for St. Edward's and Trinity

EDINBURG - Salvador Garcia scored three goals last weekend as he and the rest of the Pan American University Broncs prepare for soccer matches with St. Edward's University and Trinity University here Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Coach Eloy Moran of Pan American is confident. "If the team plays as well as last weekend we should defeat them," he said.

The Broncs are 2-2 this year after edging Sam Houston State last weekend, 3-2, and falling to Houston Baptist University, 5-4.

"We dominated them (Sam Houston) in the second half," Moran said.

Efren Lopez netted his fourth goal of the season with a penalty kick in the game's seventh minute. Garcia erupted for two more goals the second half.

The Broncs fought valiantly against a stronger, more physical Houston Baptist squad. A Colombian named Jorge Cruz scored an amazing four of Houston's five goals. "He was unbelievable," Moran commented.

Reveriano Hernandez and Garcia tagged a goal apiece for Pan American, while Jose Salinas snaired a pair. Despite the loss, Moran was pleased. "I think were really showed we can contend with Division I," he said.

Admission is free Saturday and Sunday at the campus soccer field.
