EDINBURG - Major exams will come early for the University of Texas-pan American Broncs' soccer team who have tough tests on the road this weekend.
Nationally ranked Southern Methodist University and No. 2-ranked (NAIA) Midwestern University will give the Broncs all they can handle on Friday (Sept. 1) and Monday (Sept. 4), respectively.
Many of the current players remember vividly what Coach Eloy Moran refers to as the "massacre," an 8-1 shellacking by the Mustangs two years ago in Dallas.
"They realize what it's going to take (to win)," Moran said.
One problem the Broncs must overcome is SMU's artificial turf playing surface.
"The guys have to get accustomed to how fast the ball moves," Moran said.
The Broncs are 0-0-1 after a 1-1 draw with Incarnate Word College in San Antonio last week.
Salvador Garcia assisted on Ronny Cabrera's game-tying goal. Goalie
Fredy Sanguinetti secured the tie by stopping a penalty shot.
The Broncs' first home match is Texas Lutheran College Sept. 16.
