UTPA Broncs Soccer Team Opens Season With Win Over St. Edward's

EDINBURG - Demian Morquin of Argentina banged in a penalty shot and goalie Rafael Pacheo of McAllen saved the shutout Saturday when the University of Texas-Pan American opened its soccer season by edging St. Edward's, 1-0.

Ronny Cabrera from Bolivia drew a hard foul to set up the game's only goal late in the second half. The Broncs played the season half into the teeth of a dust storm.

"We had only 12 eligible players and one didn't show up--it was like playing a whole basketball game with five players," said Coach Eloy Moran of UT Pan American. "This win is probably the ultimate surprise. It took all 11 in a team effort to win it."

Mohsen Husain of Kuwait City, Kuwait, gave the hard-pressed Bronc defense a lift in the second half, when Pacheco made two spectacular stops.

Just one of the Broncs' final 12 games will be at home, against Texas Lutheran Sept. 22.
