UTPA's Unbeaten Team Visits West Texas

CANYON, Tex - Sporting a 3-0 record, the soccer team from the University of Texas-Pan American risks its fast getaway here Saturday and Sunday against two Colorado teams.

Coach Eloy Moran sends his red-hot Broncs against Fort Lewis College of Durango, Colo., at 2 p.m. Saturday. Then the Broncs try Southern Colorado from Pueblo at 1 p.m. Sunday.

West Texas State also will play the two Colorado teams but won't face the Broncs. If two teams tie at 2-0, the trophy for this two-day tournament will be awarded on goals differential.

Mario Ribera, UT Pan American's top scorer (five goals) and Player of the Week in the Sun Belt Conference, will miss Saturday's opener because he drew a red card late in Sunday's 1-0 victory at St. Edward's University. Moran didn't fault Ribera for a sliding tackle on a muddy field.

"We'll add Javier Loyafaro from Mexico to our traveling squad this week," Moran said. "Jose Pacheco has a severely sprained ankle and is doubtful to play. Victor Ramos ran well after being kicked in his knee, which was swollen. Arnoldo Cardenas can play after having a cut on his head in Austin."

Moran is enthusiastic although his Broncs stay a road team their first nine games. Their home opener is Oct. 14 against St. Ed's.

"I feel better about the team as a whole," Moran said. "They're moving the ball just a little bit faster that last year. Our goal is to move it at a faster rate. We have had better, more intense workouts."
