AUSTIN - Unbeaten and ranked No. 10 in the strong NCAA Midwest, the soccer team from the University of Texas-Pan American faces trouble here Saturday against Centenary College.
"We've never beaten Centenary in the history of Bronc soccer," said Coach Eloy Moran of the UT Pan American Broncs. "They beat us in Shreveport last year when we finished 10-5-1.
"This year we're playing them in Austin because it's easier for us to meet them there than in Louisiana," Moran added.
The Broncs take a 5-0 record to Austin. They have won two straight tournaments on the road. At 3 p.m. Saturday they return to the field where they won the St. Edward's University Tournament two weeks ago.
"Right now everyone is, or should be, healthy for this weekend," Moran said.
"Chuy Tavarez took a knee to the thigh at West Texas State but since we have some good depth I was able to keep him out completely.
Rafael Pacheco came out of the goal and collided with one of our defenders and one of their forwards but he's okay."
"
Mario Ribera has a strained calf muscle and I've held him out of practice two days but i hope he wil be able to go Saturday," added Moran about his top scorer, with 13 points in four games.
The Broncs are ranked No. 10 in the strong Midwest Region, an NCAA soccer area that stretches from Edinburg to St. Louis to Chicago. Three teams from the region rank in the top 13 nationally--SMU No. 4, St. Louis No. 12 and Creighton (Nebraska) No. 13.
Albert Flores, starting Bronc goalie, leads the Sun Belt Conference with a 0.46 goals-against average. Ribera leads the SBC in scoring.
Victor Ramos, the Bronc runner-up for SBC Player of the Week honors, ranks second wih 12 points and is tied for the conference lead with two assists.
