UTPA Soccer Team Upsets Southwest Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo - Victor Ramos and Shane Hurley joined forces to score all three goals Friday when the winless University of Texas-Pan American soccer team shocked Southwest Missouri State, 3-2.

The Broncs nailed their first victory in six road tests via two goals and an assist by Ramos, a junior from Hollister, Calif. Hurley, a senior from Harlingen, contributed two assists plus the clinching goal in the 73rd minute to make it 3-1.

Now with a 1-4-1 record, the Broncs challenge Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday, then visit Missouri-Kansas City on Monday.

Southwest Missouri State's Bears dropped to a 5-4 record.

The Bears swarmed defensively to stop Mario Ribera of UTPA, who took seven ofhis team's 17 shots at goal. The nation's No. 2 scorer a year ago has scored one goal in the five games he has played.

Freshman star Matt Caution of SMSU scored his 10th goal in the 85th minute to make the score 3-2. Kenon Haynes headed a corner kick for the Bear's other goal in the 60th minute. But Ramos' two goals had given the Broncs a 2-0 cushion in the 44th and 58th minutes.

Goalie Albert Flores registered four saves for the Broncs, who limited the Bears to seven shots a goal.

The Broncs open their year with eight straight matches at least 290 miles from Edinburg. They return home to battle Monterrey Tech on Oct. 9 and St. Edward's University on Oct. 17.
