UTPA Soccer Team Loses to Strong St. Edward's University

EDINBURG - Playing a man short after a red-card ejection, St. Edward's University used a header by Tim Burke in the 87th minute Sunday to frustrate the Texas-Pan American Broncs in soccer, 3-2.

UTPA scored only on penalty kicks, by Rafael Cardenas in the 39th minute and by Juan Carlos Vasquez in the 78th minute. Both times the Broncs tied the score, at 1-1 and 2-2.

The fired-up Hilltoppers from Austisn, who fouled 25 times to the home team's 18, won when Burke headed in the clincher after an indirect free kick.

Nelson Arboleda from Miami, Fla., scored St. Ed's first two goals, a 25-yard blast in the 23rd minute and a five-yard rebound that broke a 1-1 halftime tie in the 57th minute. Areboleda came back from an inury, a kick in the back of the knee, to boot the go-ahead goal.

St. Edward's improved its record to 9-5 while the Broncs, plagued by close losses, fell to 2-6-1. A crowd estimated at 165 overflowed the bleachers to see UTPA's last scheduled home game before the Broncs are hosts to the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Nov. 4-6.

Mario Ribera and Vasquez each had three shots at goal for UTPA but goalie Philip Fuller of St. Ed's collected nine big saves. Goalie Jonathan McCurley of UTPA had six saves.
