TULSA, Okla. - Mario Ribera avenged himself for a frustrating soccer season when he exploded for three goals Saturday to lift the University of Texas-Pan American over Oral Roberts University, 5-3.
Ribera was the nation's No. 2 scorer in NCAA Division I a year ago. The sophomore from Bolivia had been shadowed, marked and fouled wherever he went, and had scored just one goal up to Saturday.
The gutty little Ribera flashed all his old brilliance as he scored two quick, unassisted goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes to hand the rejuvenated Broncs a 5-2 lead. Ribera also had given the Broncs a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on an assist from
Alector Cardenas.
Cardenas scored two unassisted goals himself, giving UTPA a 2-1 lead in the 17th minute, then a 3-2 lead at 28 minutes.
Goalie
Jonathan McCurley of UTPA needed to make just three saves for UTPA because the fierce Bronc defense limited the host Titans to six shots at goal.
Winless until Friday, when the Broncs gained a 3-2 victory at Southwest Missouri State, they improved their record to 2-4-1, all on the road.
ORU played most of the game Saturday with 10 men after Emmanuel Aondofar was red-carded at 27:30.
Patrick O'Boyle, Innocent Ogbe and Rodrigo Aguilera scored for ORU, which is now 3-5-1.
The Broncs end their string of eight straight road matches at Missouri-Kansas City on Monday. Then the Broncs play their home opener at 12 noon next Saturday, Oct. 9, against Monterrey Tech.
