Broncs Open Regular Season at Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. - Dr. Miguel Paredes, new coach of the University of Texas-Pan American soccer team, leads the Broncs into their first official game against Oral Roberts University at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Broncs then play at the University of Tulsa at 2 p.m. Sunday.

UTPA opened its schedule with a 4-0 shutout of Reynosa Tech on Sept. 2, but that international exhibition doesn't count in U.S. collegiate records or statistics. The Broncs face seven collegiate road games before their next home test, against Monterrey Tech Oct. 7.

Coach Paredes said the team "is basically all well," except for two players with slight injuries. Eric Martinez of Harlingen has a sore leg and Pedro Lopez of Donna has a sprained back.

The Broncs carry three goalkeepers--Albert Flores, Corpus Christi; Scott Brown, Tucson Ariz.; and Marcelo Paredes, Edinburg.

Five Broncs are from McAllen--Luis Cardenas, Jorge Cavazos, Miguel Espinosa, Ricardo Guerra, and Miguel Santos. Three come from Brownsville--Reynaldo Cisneros, Eliasib Quintanilla and Andres Rodriguez.

Of 24 players, 18 are from the Valley. Jesus Ochoa is from La Joya; Nauri Garcia and Martinez, Harlingen; Andres Sanchez and Pedro Lopez, Donna; Hector Lopez, Weslaco; Javier Hernandez, Alamo; Juan Zambrano, San Juan; Pablo Villarreal and Paredes, Edinburg.

Other Texans on the squad are Juan Romero, El Paso; Daniel Cortez, San Antonio; and Jose Alfredo Flores, Corpus Christi. From outside Texas are Jesus Leon and Brown, both of Tucson, Ariz.
