Broncs Defeat Oral Roberts in Double Overtime

TULSA, Okla. - Reynaldo Cisneros fooled the Oral Roberts University defense by blasting home a 20-yard free kick with 2:25 left in double overtime Saturday to nail Texas-Pan American's 1-0 soccer victory.

Scott Brown, goalkeeper for the UTPA Broncs from Texas, played the entire 120 minutes to shutout ORU while making 11 saves, some spectacular.

Cisneros, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Brownsville Hanna High, beat the defensive wall by kicking the game's only goal into the far corner. Had he missed, the game would have gone to penalty kicks.

The Broncs play the University of Tulsa at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Each side missed a penalty kick Saturday on a muddy field. The ORU goalie stopped Juan Romero's penalty kick in the first 30 minutes. Then the Texans got a break when a hard penalty kick by the Golden Eagles soared over the goalpost, late in the first overtime.

"We started Scott Brown at goalkeeper and never took him out," said Dr. Miguel Paredes, Bronc coach. "He did a great job--very, very impressive, diving out of place in the area, and stopping some high kicks."

Paredes praised all the Broncs, but especially Jesus Ochoa, Jorge Cavazos and Luis Cardenas for stiffening the defense against an ORU team has a Brazilian coach and five players from Brazil.

Miguel Santos of UTPA suffered a foot inury and Danny Cortez subbed for him.

"We played a very offensive game," Paredes said. "We took three direct kicks and three indirect kicks, so we got a lot of the fouls on us. They took one direct kick and two indirect."
