Broncs Come Close but Lose 2-1 Soccer Thriller

JACKSONVILLE, Fla - Western Kentucky edged Texas-Pan American in a soccer thriller Sunday, 2-1 then the weary UTPA Broncs fell Sunday in Sun Belt action to Alabama A&M, 6-2.

The Texans were playing their fourth game within four days Sunday. Mike Espinosa gave them an early 1-0 lead on an assist from Gabriel Serda, but A&M took a 3-1 halftime lead. Albert Vaquez scored UTPA's second goal on Adrian Ausucua's assist.

Ikem Udeb of Alabama A&M scored five goals on 12 shots.

In Saturday's action, Luis Cardenas scored in the 81st minute on an assist from Jaime Pruneda, but the Broncs narrowly missed their tying chances in an all-out assault at the end.

"We scored off a play by sweeper Danny Cortez against Western Kentucky," said Dr. Miguel Paredes, UTPA coach. "The freshman have done a very good job--Shawn Jones, Jaime Pruneda and Albert Vasquez, off the bench--and senior Nauri Garcia played two full games as a starter very well."

The Broncs next visit Oral Roberts University Oct. 6, Southwest Missouri State Oct. 10 and Schreiner College Oct. 13 before home games Oct. 18 and 20 against Vanderbilt and South Alabama.
