Dallas, Texas - Dallas
Baptist (23-7) used extra base hits to win both games of a doubleheader with
Texas-Pan American (14-18). The Patriots had 15 extra base hits en route to
winning 11-7 and 10-6. The series will conclude tomorrow with a starting time
of 1:00 p.m.
In game one,
the Patriots struck in the first inning. With two outs, Ryan Olivo and
Drew Holder each drew walks. Ben Zobrist smacked a three-run home
run to give DBU a 3-0 lead. In the third inning, a single from Daniel
Magness drove in Holder to make it 4-0.
Texas-Pan
American closed the gap in the fourth inning. Matt Sisk (Sr./Fort Worth,
Texas/Arlington Heights HS) hit a grounder that was misplayed by the shortstop
and allowed him to reach second. Ryan Grimet (Fr./Pearland,
Texas/Pearland HS) singled to move Sisk to third. An infield single by
Matt Eichel (Grapevine, Texas/Grapevine HS) loaded the bases. A
fielder's choice by Ricky Broyles (Jr./Longview, Texas/Northeast Texas
CC) forced Sisk out at the plate. Following a ground out, Aaron Flowers (Jr./Rowlett, Texas/Northeast Texas CC) laced a double that drove in
Grimet, Eichel and Broyles to make it 4-3. Dallas Baptist added
one run in the fourth and one in the sixth to make it 6-3.
In the seventh
inning, with one out, Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North
HS) hit a solo home run. Marco Garza (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS)
was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. A ground out moved Garza
to third and he scored on a sharp single by Sisk. That made it 6-5. The
Patriots picked up four runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth
to make it 11-5.
In the ninth
inning, Flowers led off with a single. Alamia then put the ball
over the fence for his second home run of the game, a two run shot. DBU got a
fly out, ground out and a strike out to end the game.
For UTPA,
Alamia was 2-for-5, score two runs, drove in three and had two home runs and
Flowers was 2-for-4, scored one run and drove in three. Alamia
extended his reaching base safely streak to 43 games. Juan Saenz
(Jr./Mission, Texas/Mission HS) gave up eight hits, six runs, walked five and
struck out four batters in five and one-third innings to fall to 4-1.
For DBU,
Cody Montgomery was 3-for-5, Zobrist was 3-for-3, scored two runs and
drove in three runs and Chris McCulloch was 2-for3, scored two runs and
drove in three runs.
In Game Two,
Texas-Pan American struck first. Alamia opened the first inning with a
single. Alamia then stole second and came home on a triple from T.J. Gilmer (So./Forney, Texas/Forney HS). Garza singled past the infield
to score Gilmer. Sisk struck out but Garza stole second as
he did. Grimet then hit a two run bomb to make it 4-0 Broncs.
DBU scored one
run in the second inning. In the fourth inning, Magness was hit by a
pitch to open the inning. Ned Yost then doubled off the outfield fence
to move Magness to third. Sean Burgess walked to load the bases
for Jimmy Thoma whose single scored Magness. With the bases still
loaded, Drew Noss doubled to drive in Burgess and Yost to
make it 4-4.
The Broncs took
the lead back in the top of the fifth. Alamia walked and then moved to
second on a wild pitch. Gilmer walked and Garza singled to load
the bases. Sisk hit into a double play but Alamia was moved
across the plate to make it 5-4.
In the bottom
of the fifth, a double from Burgess drove in Yost and Magness
to put the Patriots back on top 6-5. DBU would score three runs in the sixth
and one in the seventh. In the top of the ninth, Saenz hit a solo shot
with two outs to end the scoring.
For UTPA,
Garza was 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in a run, Alamia was
1-for-3 and scored two runs and Grimet drove in two runs. Alamia
pushed his reaching base safely streak to 43 games. Johhny Gibson (Sr./Sachse,
Texas/Collin County CC) gave up seven hits, six runs and struck out six batters
in five innings to fall to 2-1.
For DBU,
Noss was 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, Holder was 3-for-5, scored
two runs and drove in one and Yost was 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove
in one. Stuart Sutherland gave up two hits, one run and struck out four
batters in five innings to move to 1-1.
"Lately, our
pitching is not keeping us in the game." Said head coach Willie Gawlik.
"Our offense is very capable of scoring runs but we can't stop our opponents
from scoring either. The bottom line is the pitching has to get better for us
to be successful."
