Edinburg, Texas -
Texas-San Antonio (19-16) jumped to an early lead and held on for a 7-4 win over
Texas-Pan American (16-25). UTPA will head to Tucson, Arizona to take on
Arizona, April 16-18. The games on the 16th and 17th are
scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. while the game on the 18th is
scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
Texas-San
Antonio got the bats swinging in its first trip to the plate. Sam Mitchell
led off with a walk and Michael McKennon doubled to right center to move
Mitchell to third. A ground out scored Mitchell and moved
McKennon to third. A sacrifice fly to right field scored McKennon.
Chris Lewis walked and moved to third on a single from Aric Green.
A single from Clint Sansom scored Lewis and made it 3-0.
In the bottom
of the second inning, Marco Garza (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) led
off with a single to left field. Matt Sisk (Sr./Fort Worth,
Texas/Arlington Heights HS) took a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for a two
run home run. In the third inning, the Roadrunners used two hits, an error and
a passed ball to score two runs for a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom
of the fifth, with two outs, Ortiz singled through the left side.
Garza sent the fourth pitch he saw sailing over the left field wall to close
the gap to 5-4. In the top of the sixth, UTSA got the run back. With one out,
McKennon tripled to left center. A single through the left side from
Ryan Crew scored McKennon to make it 6-4. The Roadrunners would add
a final run in the ninth inning.
For UTPA,
Garza was 3-for-5, scored two runs and drove in two runs, Sisk had a
two-run home run and Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS)
singled to extend his reaching base streak to 50 games. Phillip Rodriguez
(Fr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) gave up six hits, five runs and struck
out one batter in four innings to fall to 1-1.
For UTSA,
Green was 3-for-5, J.R. Voyles was 3-for-4 and Crew had two
hits and drove in two runs. Jacob Sansom gave up six hits, four runs and
struck out one batter in five innings to improve to 3-0. Crew struck out
one batter in two-thirds of an inning for his second straight save.
"We didn't
execute offensively when we needed to," said head coach Willie Gawlik.
"We had several opportunities to win the game but we couldn't get a bunt down.
We made two base running errors that also cost us. In the third inning, we made
a mental mistake on defense and ended up giving up two runs. Johnny (Gibson)
(Sr./Sachse, Texas/Collin County CC) came in from the bull pen and gave us five
solid innings."
