Norman, Okla. - Not even breaking a school record could keep #18 Oklahoma (33-18) from beating Texas-Pan American (22-30) 12-2 today. In the fourth inning, Marco Garza singled for his 190th career hit. That broke the record of 189 held by Matt Siskowski (1994-97) and Leo Salinas (1997-98, 00). The Broncs will finish the 2004 season tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. game against the Sooners.
Texas-Pan American kept the game close through the first three innings, trailing 3-0. In the fourth inning, Oklahoma broke the game open by scoring six runs. In the eighth inning with one out, Aaron Flowers singled to center field to score Louie Alamia and break up the shut out. UTPA added a run in the ninth inning on T.J. Gilmer's single to right field with the bases loaded.
For UTPA, Gilmer was 2-for-3 and drove in a run and Sisk was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Juan Saenz gave up three hits, three runs (two earned) and walked four batters in one and one-third innings to fall to 6-3.
For Oklahoma, Scott Rooker was 3-for-5, Jeff Scuderi was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs and Josh Stinson was 2-for-3, scored two runs and drove in one run. David Purcey gave up four hits, walked two batters and struck out 12 in seven innings to move to 7-4 on the season.
"We lost to a very good team," said Head Coach Willie Gawlik. "We struggled on the mound in the fourth inning. That is where Oklahoma just broke the game open. I though Johnny (Gibson) did a really good job over the last four innings for us. Marco breaking the school record for hits is just an awesome accomplishment. We are going to come out tomorrow and play our best and just see what happens."
