UTPA Picks Up Two Victories in Invitational Opener

When it comes to shopping, mothers are notorious for driving around town and looking for the best two-for-one bargains.

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team found a bargain for themselves at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Friday (Sept. 3) when the Lady Broncs picked up two victories in the first day of action at the McAllen Holiday Inn UTPA Invitational.

In their first match, the Lady Broncs blanked Louisiana - Monroe, 3-0 (30-27, 35-33, 30-16), to open the tournament with a solid victory. Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) picked up her first double-double (kills-digs) of the season with a team-high 17 kills and 10 digs.

Senior Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) also added her first double-double as she returned to action for the first time since the conclusion of the 2002 season. The Harlingen, TX, native ended the match with 11 kills, 17 digs and three assists. Sophomore Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) recorded a team-high 36 assists while Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) collected a game-high 26 digs.

Ashley Williams led the Lady Indians with 13 kills, and Darci Mika added 26 assists.

The Lady Broncs were just getting started as they put together an unbelievable performance in the second match of the evening against Grambling State. UTPA clocked the Lady Tigers in straight sets (30-14, 30-25, 30-16) for the victory.

Bravo led UTPA for the second straight match with 16 kills along with six digs. Junior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) finished the match with 11 kills.

Sophomore setter Jen Dameworth dished out 34 assists, and Carol Marcengo recorded 25 digs. The Lady Broncs' defense stifled Grambling State to dismal -.108 hitting percentage while posting a .250 percentage of their own.

Lacey Cromier led Grambling State with eight kills while Krystal Credit had 16 digs.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action twice tomorrow at the McAllen Holiday Inn UTPA Invitational against Providence (1:00 p.m.) and The University of Oklahoma (7:00 p.m.)

Tournament Recaps

Oklahoma 3, Providence 0 (30-19, 30-19, 30-17)
The University of Oklahoma picked up its first victory of the season with a dominating performance over Providence, 3-0.

The Sooners were led by Jennifer Adams, who finished with 16 kills, six blocks and six digs. Rachel Jackson and Julie Chester each finished with 20 and 19 assists, respectively.

Kerry Schulz finished with a team-high seven kills for the Friars, who dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Grambling State 3, Providence 1 (30-17, 24-30, 30-20, 30-26)
Led by Lacey Cromier's 18 kills, Grambling State rolled over Providence in four sets to earn its first victory of the season.

Latasha Smith finished with 17 kills and 13 digs while Lequia Collins and Inez Wheeler each added 20 assists.

Ayana Cadres led the Friars with 13 kills and Annie Fiorvanti recorded 11 kills and 27 assists.

Oklahoma 3, Louisiana - Monroe 0 (30-26, 30-19, 33-31)
Joanna Schmitt (13 kills) and Sheena Werling (12 kills) were catalysts for the Sooners as Oklahoma blanked Louisiana - Monroe in straight sets for the second consecutive match.

Rachel Jackson dished out 25 assists while Stephanie Tengram and Werling each recorded eight digs apiece.

Ashley Williams led the Lady Indians with 10 kills, and Darci Mika contributed with 25 assists.
