Lady Broncs Suffer Pair of Setbacks at Independent Tournament

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team (10-16) suffered a pair of setbacks on the first day of the Independent National Championships in Greeley, CO, on Thursday (Nov. 10).

IPFW 3, UTPA 1 (30-13, 30-25, 24-30, 30-18)
The Lady Broncs were completely out-matched in the first set, with the Mastadons recording a .419 hitting percentage compared to the Lady Broncs' -.030. UTPA kept fighting and kept the second game close and then winning the third game on a 6-0 run. The momentum did not continue in to the fourth game for the Lady Broncs as IPFW took the game with a .325 hitting percentage.

Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) led the Lady Bronc offense with 15 kills and just three errors for a match-high .480 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) also reached double-digits in kills with 10 while notching a .250 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) turned in her ninth double-double (assists-digs) of the season with a match-high 45 assists and 10 digs. Blakely's 45 assists put her over the 600 assist mark for the season, bringing her 50 assists shy of 10th place on the single-season record list. Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglass S.S.) turned in a match-high 21 digs for her 12th 20+ digs performance of the season.

Kellie Philips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) notched her eighth double-double (kills-digs) in the last 12 matches with 11 kills and 11 digs. Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) also turned in a double-double (kills-digs) with 10 kills and 13 digs. Bravo is currently 15 kills and 19 digs shy of becoming just the third player in program history to record 300 kills and 300 digs in a single season.

Despite the Mastadons holding just a 59-52 advantage in kills the Lady Broncs notching 60 digs compared to IPFW's 52, UTPA was undone by their own errors. As a team, the Lady Broncs could manage just a .105 hitting percentage for the match with 36 hitting errors. IPFW, on the other hand, had a lofty percentage of .299 for the contest.

The Mastadons were led by Fabiana Souza who finished with a match-high 17 kills and Erika Leitzke who gave IPFW 44 assists.

Northern Colorado 3, UTPA 0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-25)
The Lady Broncs suffered their second setback of the tournament after being swept by the host-squad Northern Colorado in three sets.

Holthe was the only Lady Bronc player to record double-digits kills as she collected 10 in the match. Blakely dished out 35 assists while Phillips recorded eight-kills and 14 digs in the match.

Lenay Goble finished with a match-high 14 kills, including a .417 hitting percentage in the match. Corrinne Chapin quarterbacked the UNC offense with a match-high 48 assists, and Abby Mayne collected 26 digs in the match.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Nov. 11) against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at 4:00 p.m.
