Wichita State University remained unbeaten during the 2005-06 campaign with a 97-66 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American on Tuesday (Nov. 22) at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, KS, in the second game of the South Padre Island Invitational.
The Shockers found their shooting touch early in the game as they converted on 52.8 percent (19-36) of their shots in the first half and extended it past the intermission as they shot 54.5 percent (18-33) in the second half. For the game, the Shockers finished with a shooting percentage of 53.6 (37-69) and had 10 guys shoot better than 50 percent in the game.
The Shockers had five players reach double figures with Sean Ogirri leading the way with a career-high 22 points while Karon Bradley and Paul Miller each finished with 15 points a piece. Kyle Wilson contributed with 12 points, and P.J. Cousinard chipped in with 10 points for Wichita State, who had eight players shot over 50 percent in the contest.
For the game, the Broncs shot 37.1 percent (23-62), including a dismal 23.0 percent (7-30) in the first half, which resulted in a 47-23 deficit heading into halftime. In the second half, the Broncs were able to better than margin by shooting 54.5 percent (18-33), but it fell to short at the end.
The Broncs were able to find their stroke from behind the three-point line as they connected on a season-high nine treys after only connecting on two combined in their first two games of the season. Wichita State dominated the glass in the contest by a 47-30 margin, including grabbing 20 offensive rebounds.
Sophomore Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) led the squad with a career-high 18 points while Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) added 12 points and four rebounds in 28 minutes of action. Johnathan Chatman (Chicago, IL/Sheridan College) added nine points on a trio of three-pointers while Larry Sheppard (Baton Rouge, LA/Iowa Western C.C.) finished with nine assists, six points and four steals in the contest.
UTPA dropped its second consecutive game on the road and saw its overall record fall to 1-2 while the Shockers improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Broncs will be back in action for their third game of the South Padre Island Invitational against Texas Southern University of Friday (Nov. 25) at the South Padre Island Convention Center with tip-off set for 8:30 p.m.
