Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team couldn't overcome a horrid first half as the Broncs dropped their fifth straight game with a 103-50 throttling by Texas Tech on Saturday (Dec. 10) in Lubbock, TX.

The 50-point setback was the worst loss for the Broncs since TCU handed UTPA a 153-87 defeat during the 1997-98 season. It was also the first time in over a decade that the Broncs have given up back-to-back 100-point performances.

The Red Raiders' duo of Dior Lowhorn and Jarrius Jackson quickly gave Texas Tech an 11-0 advantage at the 17:49 mark, which was highlighted by four consecutive conversions by the home squad to open the game. Lowhorn scored eight points during those first 2:11 of the game, connecting on all four of his field goal attempts.

The Broncs were able to cut the lead down to eight points at 15-7 at the 15:46 mark when Johnathan Chatman (Chicago, IL/Sheridan College) connected on his first of three three-pointers of the game.

Following another Chatman trey with 13:12 remaining to cut the deficit to 17-10, the Red Raiders proceeded to go on a 10-0 run during the next two minutes, converting eight points on four UTPA turnovers. At the second media timeout of the first half, the Red Raiders held a 27-11 lead and were shooting 73.3 percent (11-15) compared to 30.8 percent (4-13) by the Broncs.

During the next four minutes, the Broncs continued to turnover the ball, including a string of six consecutive miscues that led to 11 points and gave the Red Raiders a 38-13 advantage with 7:55 remaining in the first half. Through the first 12 minutes of the game, UTPA had committed 14 turnovers, which resulted in 18 points for the Red Raiders.

The story remained the same throughout the next seven minutes with Bronc miscues turning into Red Raider points as Texas Tech went on a 28-5 run and possessed a 50-16 lead with 3:51 remaining in the game.

Life for the Broncs wouldn't be any easier during the remainder of the first half as the Red Raiders extended their lead to 36 points at 57-21 heading into intermission. For the third consecutive game, the Broncs allowed their opponents to connect on over 60 percent of their shots in the first half as Texas Tech converted on 64.9 percent (24-37) of their attempts.

There would be no solace in the first half stat sheet for the Broncs as they were only able to convert on 28.6 percent (8-28) of their shots. Coming into the game, UTPA was averaging 16.7 turnovers per game, and that mark was eclipsed as the Broncs committed 23 turnovers in the first set of 20 minutes, which led to 28 points for the Red Raiders.

In the first half, Lowhorn was the top scorer as he scored 19 points on 9-12 shooting while Jackson added 13 points on 5-7 shooting. The Red Raiders also dominated the paint as they held a 28-6 advantage in the first half.

Texas Tech had no problem going over the hill on the Broncs as the Red Raiders stretched their lead to 41 points at 65-24 with 17:05 remaining in the game following a three-pointer by Drew Coffman.

The Red Raiders made an 18-9 run during the middle minutes of the second half as they extended the lead to their fifth decade at 83-33 with 7:54 remaining in the game after Michael Prince connected on a short five-footer in the paint.

Following a three-pointer by Alan Voskuil, the Red Raiders took a 100-50 lead on the Broncs and became the second team in as many games to eclipse the 100-point mark against UTPA. Texas Tech would cruise to a 103-50 triumph over the Broncs on their home court.

Jackson finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with six steals and six assists in 22 minutes of action while Lowhorn finished with 19 points - all coming in the first half. Terry Martin contributed with 13 points on 5-8 shooting along with three steals, three rebounds and three assists in the contest.

Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) finished with a team-high 12 points to go along with a career-high seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Kano Edwards (Bridgeport, CT/Western Nebraska C.C.) finished with 12 points while Chatman added 11 points, connecting on a trio of three-pointers.
