Feb. 12, 2005

Box Score

Sophomore Murray Gilbertson drilled a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to lead Lamar University past UT - Pan American, 9-7, at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Saturday (Feb. 12).

With the score 7-6 in favor of the Cardinals, Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) walked to start off the eighth inning before being replaced by Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) at first base. Following a sacrifice bunt by Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) and an Aaron Flowers' (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) groundout, Honeycutt would move to third before scoring on a triple by senior Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University). The RBI was the fifth on the season for Jones, who shares the team-lead with Flowers.

After a scoreless ninth inning for both teams, Gilbertson sent a Tim Haines' (Mission, TX/Blinn College) slider floating over the left field fence with a pair of outs in the 10th inning. The Broncs were able to load the bases in the bottom half of the frame with two outs, but Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

The early part of the game gave plenty of excitement to the baseball faithful at the stadium as Lamar jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after Michael Ambort connected on a grand slam off UTPA starter Bobby Gomez (Falfurrias, TX/Falfurrias H.S.).

The Cardinals would tack on another run in the top of the second, but UTPA would tie the game in the bottom half of the frame when Flowers drilled a grand slam of his own to even the game at 5-5. It was the first home run of the season for Flowers, who leads the team with a .458 batting average.

Flowers led the Broncs offensively as the UTPA senior had three hits in four plate appearances, including four RBI and one run scored. Alamia finished with two hits with one RBI and one run scored.

Haines suffered his first loss of the season as he tossed two innings, allowing two runs on one hit. Gomez lasted three innings, giving up six runs on five hits.

For Lamar, Jo Jo Haney led the team with three hits while Ambort and Andrew Leal each added two hits a piece for the winners. Steve MacFarland, who picked up the save in last night's game, earned his first win of the season after throwing 2.2 innings while giving up three hits and no runs.

The Broncs and Cardinals will square off for the final time in the three-game series with game time set for 1:00 p.m.
