The University of Texas-Pan American (11-13) men's basketball team suffered a 78-69 setback to Birmingham-Southern College (13-12) on Thursday (Feb. 17) at the Bill Battle Coliseum in Birmingham, AL.
Senior Sergio Sanchez (San Antonio, TX/Temple College) finished with a game-high 22 points on 6-15 shooting, including 5-12 from behind the three-point line. It was the fourth time this season that Sanchez, who is averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game, has collected 20 or more points in a contest.
The Panthers, who shot 47.8 percent (22-46) in the game, had a quartet of players finish in double figures with Bucky McMillan leading the team with 19 points on 6-10 shooting, including 6-10 from the foul line. Birmingham-Southern held a distinct advantage over the Broncs at the charity stripe, connecting on 28-35 compared to 10-13 from UTPA.
Jakob Sigurdarson and Arnold Gore each scored 15 points a piece while Augustinas Vitas notched 11 points and five rebounds for the Panthers.
Senior Alvaidas Gedminas (Plunge, Lithuania/Kirtland Community College) racked up his second double-double (points-rebounds) of the season with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance. It was the 10th time this season that UTPA's man in the middle has scored in double figures.
Freshman Zach Trader (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte H.S.) tied a career-high with 10 points on 4-5 shooting while collecting three rebounds and a pair of assists. Eric Montalvo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) and Matt Berry (Tulsa, OK/Indiana State University) each scored eight points for the Broncs.
UTPA shot 42.9 percent (25-59) from the floor while connecting on nine treys in the contest. The Broncs held a 34-30 advantage over Birmingham-Southern in the rebounding category.
The Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 19) against Central Baptist College at the UTPA Fieldhouse for Senior Night. Tip-off for the game is set for 7:30 p.m.
