The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team lost their second straight decision, 55-52 at Northern Arizona, in the second game of their current four game road trip.
UTPA jumped on the Lumberjacks in the early-going, starting the game on a 10-2 run, with eight of the ten points scored by Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College), for an eight point lead. The Lady Broncs led by as many as nine points during the first half when Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County Community College) drained a three-pointer with 11:25 on the clock. UTPA led by three at the intermission.
In the second stanza, Northern Arizona took the lead at the 13:46 mark on a pair of Alyssa Wahl free throws and the Lumberjacks held the rest of the lead throughout the game. The Lady Broncs, after trailing by 10 midway through the half, fought back over the final 10 minutes, pulling within two points with just 1:17 left to play on a Rachel Jones (Little Rock, AR/Little Rock Central H.S.) free throw.
Montague led the way for the Lady Broncs, pouring in a team-high 14 points on 5-11 shooting. Montague connected on 4-10 shots from behind the three-point arc and grabbed three rebounds. As a team, the UTPA connected on 50% of their three-point attempts (7-14).
Reed finished the night second on the team in scoring with eight points in addition to two assists. Reed was 3-7 from the field and 2-3 on three-point field goals. Freshman Whitney Coulson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Lancer H.S.) had her best defensive game of the season with a career-high four blocks and five rebounds, all of which were on the defensive end.
The Lumberjacks were led by Wahl, who poured in a game-high 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead all players. Megan Porter also scored in double-digits, pitching in 12 points while Sade Cunningham dished out six assists for NAU.
UTPA out-shot the Lumberjacks, 39%-35%, but allowed NAU to attempt 14 more field goals in the game. The Lady Broncs held NAU to just 1-8 shooting on three-pointers, but allowed 32 points in the paint, compared to 14 for UTPA.
Turnovers once again hurt the Lady Broncs, allowing 24 points off turnovers and only scoring five themselves. UTPA committed 19 turnovers in the match-up while creating just 11 on defense. The two teams were both tough on the boards, with NAU holding a slight advantage, 39-38.
The Lady Broncs return to action on Sunday (Jan. 15) when they travel to Greeley, CO to take on the Northern Colorado Bears at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
