Chris Wallace drained a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining in overtime to break a 62-62 tie en route to leading the University of Tulsa to a 70-66 victory over the UTPA men's basketball team at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Saturday (Jan. 7).

The Golden Hurricane was able to force the Broncs into a pair of miscues following the Wallace trey, and converted on 5-6 free throws down the stretch to push the lead to a two-possession game and allow Tulsa to escape with a 70-66 victory.

"We have got to learn how to put an entire game together," said head coach Robert Davenport. "We didn't execute our offense, and we took a lot of off-balanced, quick, bad shots. We have a bunch of great kids on our team, but we have to find a way to make them understand what they need to do in order to be successful."

The game pitting the Broncs and Golden Hurricane could be categorized as a game of streaks. In translation, one team would make a big run before allowing the other to catch up with a huge run of its own.

The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to start the game, but the Broncs battled back and went on a 15-0 run to take a 15-6 lead with 11:59 remaining in the game.

The Golden Hurricane was able to cut the lead down to 18-17 with 7:21 remaining in the game when Brett McDade converted on a lay-in. After a UTPA turnover, Tulsa was able to regain the lead at 19-18 following a jumper in the paint by Anthony Price. Price finished with a double-double (points-rebounds) on the evening with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance.

The Broncs were able to regain the lead and extend it to seven points at 31-24 at the 2:07 mark following a Kano Edwards (Bridgeport, CT/Western Nebraska C.C.) jumper in the paint. The Golden Hurricane was able to cut into the lead, and UTPA headed into halftime with a 32-26 advantage.

Early in the second half, the Broncs were able to take their biggest lead of the game at nine points at 37-28 after Zach Trader (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte H.S.) connected on two of his team-high 15 points. However - Tulsa went on an 8-0 run and cut into the lead at one point with 12:55 remaining in the game.

Tulsa took over the lead at the 8:24 mark following a jumper by Darold Crow, who collected 14 points in the game with all of them coming in the second half. The Golden Hurricane extended its lead to eight points at 54-46 with 4:46 remaining.

The Broncs had one more final run left in them as they ended the game with an 11-3 run at the end of the game. With the score tied at 57-57, Trader grabbed a Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) rebound and tossed up a shot that went off the backboard, rattled around the rim then fell out, which sent the game to overtime.

In the extra session, the Golden Hurricane out-scored UTPA by a 13-9 margin.

For the Broncs, Larry Sheppard (Baton Rouge, LA/Iowa Western C.C.) finished with 14 points, including a trio of three-pointers, to go along with five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Derrick East (Binger, OK/Lookeba-Sickles H.S.) added 14 points, including 8-9 from the charity stripe, and eight rebounds.

The Broncs dropped their record to 2-13 and will look to snap an 11-game losing streak against Monterrey Tech at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Tuesday (Jan. 10) with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
